On the last two Mondays in April, the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 999 of Sylva, received hands on automotive maintenance training at the Andy Shaw Ford Service Department in Sylva, NC. The young men are working towards an Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge and will be tested on the knowledge that they have learned in order to earn their badges.

Service Manager, David Rogers, Parts Manager, Tony Walls, President/GM, Larry Hinton, and other Andy Shaw Ford team members, all took part in teaching the Scouts basic automotive maintenance. After the boys had their fill of pizza, they began hands-on automotive training.  The Andy Shaw Ford employees walked the Scouts through a standard Jackson County service inspection. They participated in checking the turn signals, lights, battery, tires, and more. A couple volunteers were also able to help with an oil change. These are just a few of the many skills that the Scouts were taught during their time in the Andy Shaw Ford garage!

Advancement Chairman of Troop 999, Loyd Lyons stated, “The Andy Shaw Ford employees taught the Boy Scouts Troop 999 of Sylva skills that will last a lifetime! Many of the Scouts have interests in cars and some are nearing driving age, so Larry Hinton and employees opened up the garage to help the entire troop earn their Maintenance Automotive Merit Badge.”

Hinton is no stranger to the Boy Scouts as he is the Treasurer of Troop 999.  His son Travis Hinton, along with Chance Reed and Brody Sherman, all recently earned the Eagle Scout Rank, which is the highest achievement attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Larry Hinton and the Andy Shaw Ford team are honored to help these young men as they strive to better both themselves and the community.

Service Manager, David Rogers stated, “It was a pleasure being able to teach the Scouts from Troop 999. They were very eager to learn and quick to volunteer to participate. As a young man it is important to know these standard car maintenance skills.”
